Andrew Stockhausen

Andrew Stockhausen is an experienced psychotherapist, who is in the final stages of completing his doctoral thesis to become a counselling psychologist. He is a BABCP accredited cognitive behavioural psychotherapist, with further training in psychodynamic therapy and schema therapy. Andrew has worked for several NHS mental health services, specialising in a range of anxiety and depression related difficulties, including trauma-focused CBT. Andrew’s approach to therapy is integrative, combining different therapeutic tools and approaches to fit the needs of the individual.

At the heart of his work, Andrew emphasises each client’s concrete experience and the way they uniquely make sense of their lives. He takes time to understand the social and cultural contexts of each client and considers how they have influenced and continue to influence the individual. In sessions, by encouraging curiosity in their own lives through reflection, he utilises the therapeutic relationship to facilitate validation, self-acceptance, and change in line with his client’s values. Andrew’s therapeutic approach is grounded in principles of anti-oppressive practice, equity, and intersectionality. Clinical Specialisms and Research Andrew’s clinical areas of interest and current area of research are: Addressing the unique psychological stressors that LGBTQ+ people experience as a result of belonging to minority and stigmatised groups. Working with people of colour to help them to understand racial micro-aggressions, develop resilience and heal from the impact of oppression. Working with adults who have experienced adverse childhood events like neglect, physical and emotional trauma Working with adults who experience internalised oppression, lack of self-acceptance and feelings of shame.
