Intensive Couples Therapy Day
Dedicated time for your relationship

When a relationship is under strain, finding a way forward can feel difficult - particularly when conversations keep returning to the same place, emotions are running high, or you no longer feel able to really hear one another.
Our Intensive Couples Therapy Day offers couples the opportunity to step away from everyday pressures and devote meaningful, uninterrupted time to their relationship.
Rather than working in shorter sessions spread over a number of weeks, you will spend a carefully structured day with a couples specialist with over 25 years of clinical experience. This gives you time to explore what is happening between you in greater depth, understand the patterns that may be keeping you stuck, and begin finding more constructive ways of communicating and relating to one another.
The aim is not to decide who is right or wrong. It is to create a calm, thoughtful and impartial space in which both partners can speak honestly, feel heard and gain a clearer understanding of themselves, each other and their relationship.
Why choose an intensive day?
For some couples, weekly therapy is exactly the right approach. For others, having a longer period of focused therapeutic work can be particularly valuable.
You may have reached a point where something needs to change, be facing an important decision about your future together, or simply feel that your relationship deserves more attention than you have been able to give it.
An intensive day may also suit couples with demanding schedules who find it difficult to commit to regular weekly appointments.
Having several sessions within the same day allows the therapeutic work to develop without the usual interruption of waiting a week between conversations. There is time to move beyond the immediate disagreement and explore the feelings, needs, experiences and patterns underneath it.
This concentrated format can help couples develop new insight, shift entrenched ways of communicating and leave with a clearer understanding of what needs to happen next.
The day can be booked as a standalone piece of work or used as the beginning of ongoing couples therapy.
What can we work on?
Every relationship is different, and the day will be shaped around the issues that matter most to you as a couple.
You might want help with communication that has become difficult or repetitive; recurring arguments or unresolved resentment; emotional or physical disconnection; intimacy and sex; trust following a rupture or betrayal; significant life changes; different needs or expectations within the relationship; or uncertainty about whether and how to move forward together.
You do not need to arrive knowing exactly what needs to change. Part of the work is helping you understand what is happening between you and why.
Before your appointment
Ahead of the day, both partners complete a confidential preliminary questionnaire.
This gives each of you an opportunity to describe the relationship from your own perspective, including the difficulties you are experiencing, what feels important to you and what you would most like to gain from the day.
Your therapist will review these before you meet so that your time together can be used as thoughtfully and effectively as possible.
Your Intensive Couples Therapy Day
The programme consists of three 90-minute therapy sessions, with breaks between sessions and time for lunch.
Session One - Understanding each of you
The first session creates space for both partners to be understood individually within the context of the relationship.
You will explore what matters to each of you - your needs, values, hopes and expectations, as well as the disappointments, fears, sensitivities or experiences that may be influencing the relationship today.
Each partner is given time to speak and to listen. This often brings to light things that can be difficult to express during everyday conversations.
Session Two - Understanding what happens between you
The second session focuses more closely on the relationship itself.
Together, you will explore the difficulties you are currently facing and what happens when sensitive or emotionally charged subjects arise.
Your therapist will pay particular attention to the way you communicate: how you express what you need, how you interpret one another, and how each of you responds when you feel hurt, criticised, frightened, frustrated or vulnerable.
The purpose is to help you recognise the dynamic that develops between you, rather than seeing the difficulty as belonging solely to one partner.
Session Three - Creating change
In the final main session, the focus turns towards the patterns and behaviours that shape your relationship in everyday life.
Many of our responses in relationships become automatic over time. We may withdraw, pursue, defend ourselves, become critical, shut down or react in ways that make sense in the moment but ultimately take us further away from what we want.
By recognising these patterns more clearly, you can begin to make different choices.
Together with your therapist, you will consider what each of you can do differently, what the relationship needs, and what realistic changes could help you communicate and connect more effectively going forward.
Bringing the day together
At the end of the programme, there will be time to reflect on what has emerged during the day and identify the most important insights and next steps to take with you.
Following the appointment, your therapist will also prepare a personalised written report bringing together the key themes of your work and the areas you may wish to continue focusing on in your relationship.
Some couples find that one intensive day gives them the clarity and momentum they were looking for. Others choose to continue with couples therapy afterwards to deepen and consolidate the work.
Is an Intensive Couples Therapy Day right for us?
Choosing to spend a day focusing on your relationship is a significant commitment from both partners.
You do not have to agree about the problems, and you do not need to know what the outcome of therapy will be. What matters is that you are both willing to come into the room, engage with the process and try to understand both your own experience and your partner's.
For couples who feel stuck, disconnected or at an important point in their relationship, having protected time with an experienced therapist can provide something that is often difficult to create at home: space to slow things down, understand what is really happening, and consider the way forward together.
